Eyewitness (ASUS PA248Q) comes from an interest in contextualizing information and how power, politics, and social structures impact knowledge. Selecting phrases from a press release on the ASUS PA248Q desktop monitor, I applied the marketing language used to sell this model with long exposures of news stories played on it. Various factors impact the content that plays on any screen, including the machine’s capabilities and limitations, the words used to ascribe value to it, the spaces it resides in, and the user. It is, in effect, an always-mediated object, yet is most often seen as an inert relay point that dutifully displays transmitted media to the viewer. Creating a physical link between the monitor’s advertising and displayed images establishes a material connection between them, challenging the screen's potential objectivity. The placement of text and image on the same plane explicitly ties the reading of one to the other. This work presents a case for information as a malleable entity, dependent on and reflective of the interests of the intermediate source.
